Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino and Foreign Minister Javier Martínez-Acha in Panama City. The meeting focused on addressing regional and global challenges, according to Spokesperson Tammy Bruce.
During the discussions, Secretary Rubio conveyed that President Trump has made a preliminary determination regarding the influence and control of the Chinese Communist Party over the Panama Canal area. He stated that this situation is considered a threat to the canal and violates the Treaty Concerning the Permanent Neutrality and Operation of the Panama Canal. "Secretary Rubio made clear that this status quo is unacceptable and that absent immediate changes, it would require the United States to take measures necessary to protect its rights under the Treaty."
Rubio also highlighted collaborative efforts aimed at resolving illegal migration issues in the hemisphere. He thanked President Mulino for supporting a joint repatriation program, which has helped reduce illegal migration through the Darien Gap. Additionally, he emphasized improving investment conditions to ensure fair competition for U.S. firms.
The Secretary praised President Mulino’s leadership in promoting democracy in Venezuela. He expressed gratitude for their productive discussion and reaffirmed U.S. commitment to strengthening ties with Panama: "He noted this meeting marks an important step in reinvigorating the strategic relationship between the United States and Panama, in line with President Trump’s vision."
