Woman sentenced for firearm thefts committed with fugitive partner

Timothy T. Duax U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Iowa

A woman involved in firearm thefts during two burglaries was sentenced to over four years in federal prison on January 31, 2025. Madison Diane Kidd, aged 26 from Stratford, Iowa, pled guilty on August 16, 2024, to possession of firearms and ammunition by a prohibited person.

Court documents revealed that Kidd harbored Michael Ackerson, a federal fugitive with an outstanding warrant, at her residence in late 2022 and early 2023. Together they committed burglaries on January 11 and January 13, 2023, at two homes located on Brushy Creek Road in Webster County, Iowa. The stolen items included five firearms, a safe with coins and jewelry, and a compound bow. Kidd concealed some of these items at her home where law enforcement later discovered them during a search conducted on January 25, leading to Ackerson's arrest.

At the time of the incidents in January 2023, Kidd was using methamphetamine and had three prior felony convictions. After Ackerson’s arrest, both discussed responsibility for the stolen firearms through recorded jail calls. Additionally, Kidd accessed Ackerson's Google account to delete evidence.

Ackerson received a sentence of 100 months' imprisonment on December 6, 2023 after pleading guilty to escape from custody and possession of firearms by a felon.

Kidd's sentencing took place in Sioux City before United States District Court Judge Leonard T. Strand who imposed a sentence of 57 months' imprisonment along with an order for $865.34 restitution to victims and three years of supervised release post-incarceration. There is no parole option available under the federal system.

This case falls under Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), aimed at reducing violent crime through community collaboration with law enforcement agencies across various levels.

Currently held by the United States Marshal’s Service until her transfer to federal prison is complete; this prosecution was managed by Assistant United States Attorney Kyndra Lundquist following investigations carried out jointly by several agencies including U.S Marshals Service among others involved locally within Iowa regions such as Webster County Sheriff’s Office etcetera...
