Good afternoon. Secretary of State Marco Rubio was warmly welcomed at a meet and greet with employees and families of the U.S. Embassy in Panama City. The event marked Rubio's first visit to Panama as Secretary of State.
Mr. Barrett opened the gathering, acknowledging the strong relationship between the U.S. and Panama. "As the Secretary and all of us know, the U.S. and Panama relationship is strong," he stated, noting that despite past challenges, the partnership remains robust.
Barrett praised the embassy staff for their hard work in enhancing safety and security through efforts such as a memorandum of understanding that has significantly reduced migrant numbers through Darién. He highlighted achievements in narcotics seizures and U.S. investment contributions to Panama's prosperity.
Secretary Rubio addressed the attendees with humor, expressing gratitude for their service. "There might be a future secretary of state, maybe even a future president sitting here in the front row," he remarked playfully to young audience members.
Rubio emphasized his appreciation for leading what he considers "the greatest diplomatic corps in the history of the world." He acknowledged how diplomatic relations contribute to mutual prosperity and security between nations.
Reflecting on his choice to visit Panama first, Rubio cited its warm climate, Spanish-speaking population, and commendable embassy staff as factors influencing his decision.
The Secretary expressed gratitude towards those ensuring safety at embassies, including Diplomatic Security personnel and Marines. He also recognized local staff members' vital roles in representing America abroad: "You are the face of the United States."
Special recognition was given to long-serving local employees Mabel Camarena and Mirtha for their decades-long commitment to supporting embassy operations.
Rubio concluded by inviting input from attendees on improving conditions for embassy staff during their postings abroad.
