Honduran national sentenced for illegal re-entry into the US

Duane A. Evans, U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Louisiana

A Honduran national, Juan Jose Arriaga-Moreno, also known as "Jaime Garcia Matamoros," has been sentenced for illegal re-entry into the United States. The sentence was announced by U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans on January 30, 2025. Arriaga-Moreno, aged 59, was sentenced to time served—equivalent to six months of imprisonment—and will be deported by the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). He had been in custody since August 29, 2024.

Court documents reveal that Arriaga-Moreno was previously removed from the United States on November 9, 2018. This removal followed his encounter with ICE officials who determined he lacked legal authorization to remain in the country. On August 29, 2024, he was once again found without legal permission in Terrytown, Louisiana.

U.S. Attorney Evans commended ICE for their role in investigating this case. The prosecution is being handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Carter K.D. Guice Jr., from the General Crimes Unit.
