A federal jury in Greenbelt, Maryland, has found Stephen Kennedy guilty of multiple charges, including conspiracy to commit arson and commercial robbery. The 33-year-old from Temple Hills was also convicted of using a firearm during a crime of violence and being a felon in possession of a firearm. However, he was acquitted on one count of arson affecting interstate commerce.
The announcement came from U.S. Attorney Erek L. Barron for the District of Maryland and several law enforcement officials involved in the case. According to the indictment, Kennedy and his accomplices targeted 7-Eleven stores between January 2021 and January 2022, using explosives to ignite fires as part of their plan to steal cash from ATMs.
Kennedy faces significant prison time for these offenses, with sentences ranging from five years to life imprisonment depending on the charge. His co-defendant Donnell Kelly had previously pleaded guilty and received a ten-year sentence.
The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative aimed at reducing violent crime through community collaboration and strategic enforcement. The investigation saw cooperation among various law enforcement agencies, including the ATF's Baltimore Field Division and local police departments.
Sentencing for Kennedy is scheduled for May 30, 2025.
