Kanawha County man admits to federal gun charge

William S. Thompson U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of West Virginia

Jason Douglas MaComber, a 52-year-old resident of St. Albans, has admitted guilt to the charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm. The plea was entered in Charleston, West Virginia.

Court documents and proceedings reveal that on June 12, 2023, MaComber was found with a Remington model 870 Wingmaster 12-gauge shotgun in St. Albans. Federal law prohibits individuals with prior felony convictions from owning firearms or ammunition. MaComber had previous felony convictions including possession of dangerous drugs/controlled substances on November 20, 2007, possession of a firearm by a felon on June 24, 2014, and illegal firearm transportation on July 1, 2019. All these offenses were adjudicated in San Bernardino, California's Superior Court.

The shotgun found in MaComber's possession had been altered with a shortened barrel and was not registered as required by federal regulations.

MaComber's sentencing is scheduled for April 22, 2025. He could face up to 15 years in prison along with up to three years of supervised release and a fine reaching $250,000.

The announcement was made by United States Attorney Will Thompson who praised the efforts of the South Charleston Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) for their investigative work.

The hearing was overseen by United States District Judge Joseph R. Goodwin. The prosecution is being handled by Assistant United States Attorney JC MacCallum.

This case falls under Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence through collaboration between law enforcement agencies and community organizations. The strategy emphasizes trust-building within communities, supporting violence prevention initiatives, setting clear enforcement priorities, and evaluating outcomes.
