The U.S. Department of the Treasury has addressed a letter to Congress concerning its payment systems managed by the Bureau of the Fiscal Service. The department emphasized its commitment to maintaining financial integrity and operational efficiency in disbursing nearly 90 percent of federal payments, amounting to over 1.2 billion transactions annually.
"Treasury has no higher obligation than managing the government’s finances on behalf of the American people, and its payments system is critical to that process," stated the letter. It highlighted ongoing efforts to safeguard the system's integrity and security, crucial for preventing any economic disruptions.
The Treasury is currently reviewing these systems to enhance payment integrity without affecting existing operations. "Importantly, the ongoing review of Treasury’s systems is not resulting in the suspension or rejection of any payment instructions submitted to Treasury by other federal agencies across the government," assured the department. Essential services like Social Security and Medicare remain unaffected.
Tom Krause, a Treasury employee with extensive experience as a technology executive and chief financial officer, is leading this review. He has been appointed as a "special government employee" for this task, ensuring compliance with all ethical standards and security requirements. Mr. Krause's role involves collaboration with veteran career officials at Treasury.
"Treasury will continue its efforts to promote efficiency and effectiveness in its operations, and to prevent waste, fraud, and abuse," concluded the letter.
