Moolenaar supports Trump's tariffs on China; calls for legislative action

Chairman John Moolenaar of the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party has expressed his support for President Trump's recent decision to impose tariffs on the People's Republic of China. These tariffs, which took effect at midnight, are part of a broader effort to address trade imbalances and protect American industries.

The move also includes closing the "de minimis" loophole, which previously allowed goods valued under $800 to enter the United States without inspections or duties. This loophole had been criticized for enabling companies like Shein and Temu to import products into American markets, often produced under questionable labor conditions, thus impacting domestic employment.

"Eliminating the de minimis exclusion is a critical step in ensuring fair competition for American workers and companies while stopping the import of Chinese goods made with forced labor," said Chairman Moolenaar. He emphasized that the Select Committee has played a key role in highlighting these issues, particularly focusing on how China's government contributes to global problems such as the fentanyl crisis by supporting chemical production used in drug manufacturing.

Moolenaar further stated, "I stand firmly with President Trump in taking action to hold the CCP accountable and protect the American people. Now, it’s up to Congress to take the next step and pass legislation to permanently address de minimis treatment for products imported from China."

Reports detailing Temu and Shein's exploitation of de minimis regulations have been published by the Select Committee. Additionally, proposed legislation aiming to end Permanent Normal Trade Relations with China is available for review.
