Apple has announced the launch of a new Black Unity Collection in honor of Black History Month. The collection includes a special-edition Apple Watch Black Unity Sport Loop, a matching watch face, and iPhone and iPad wallpapers. The initiative aims to celebrate Black culture and community.
The company is supporting several global organizations with grants as part of this launch. These organizations include the Ellis Marsalis Center for Music in New Orleans, Battersea Arts Centre in London, Music Forward Foundation in Los Angeles, Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney, and The National Museum of African American Music in Nashville, Tennessee. This support aligns with Apple's commitment to advancing economic, educational, and creative opportunities worldwide.
Black creatives and allies at Apple collaborated on the design of the new collection called Unity Rhythm. It incorporates colors from the Pan-African flag: black, green, and red. The Black Unity Sport Loop features a custom pattern that creates a lenticular effect, revealing green on one side and red on the other. When worn, the band appears dynamic as it shifts colors with wrist movement.
The Unity Rhythm watch face features numerals formed by intertwined threads of red, green, and yellow. It reacts to the gyroscope so that when users raise their wrists to check time, strands coalesce into digits. Rhythmic chimes mark every hour and half-hour.
The Unity Rhythm iPhone and iPad wallpapers feature custom lettering spelling "Unity," which changes orientation when devices are unlocked or locked.
The Black Unity Sport Loop is available for order online today at $49 (U.S.) and will be available in stores this week. It comes in 42mm and 46mm sizes compatible with Apple Watch Series 4 or newer models.
The Unity Rhythm watch face will be released through an upcoming software update requiring Apple Watch Series 6 or later models along with iPhone Xs or later models.
Similarly designed wallpapers will also become available via software updates for various iPhone models starting from Xs onward along with specific iPad versions such as Pro series among others.
