Springfield man pleads guilty to illegal firearm possession

ORGANIZATIONS IN THIS STORY

A Springfield resident, James Elliott, has admitted guilt in a federal court in Bangor for the unlawful possession of a firearm. This plea follows an incident reported in February 2024 when Elliott allegedly threatened an insurance home inspector with a firearm.

Court documents reveal that during a search of Elliott's residence in March 2024, law enforcement discovered six firearms, including a loaded .44 magnum lever action rifle. Due to two previous felony convictions in Kansas, Elliott is legally barred from owning firearms.

Elliott could face up to 15 years of imprisonment and a fine reaching $250,000. Additionally, he may be subject to three years of supervised release post-incarceration. The final sentence will be determined by a federal district judge after reviewing the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other legal considerations.

The investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), with support from the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office. The Maine Warden Service and the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency also contributed to the case.
