Christopher McCarty, a 33-year-old resident of Manhattan, has pled guilty to mailing a threatening letter aimed at two New York State judges. The announcement was made by United States Attorney Carla B. Freedman and Craig L. Tremaroli, Special Agent in Charge of the Albany Field Office of the FBI.
McCarty confessed that between May and June 2023, while incarcerated at Auburn Correctional Facility in Auburn, New York, he sent a letter on or about May 31, 2023. The letter was addressed to New York State Governor Kathy Hochul and contained threats to kill two judges who had presided over his case leading to his imprisonment.
The sentencing is set for June 10, 2025, before Senior United States District Judge Glenn T. Suddaby. McCarty could face up to five years in prison, three years of post-release supervision, and a fine reaching $250,000.
The investigation was conducted by the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force alongside the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision. Assistant U.S. Attorney Rick Belliss is handling the prosecution.
