Amazon Web Services (AWS), a subsidiary of Amazon.com, Inc., has announced a collaboration with Honda Motor Company aimed at transforming the automaker's vehicles into software-defined vehicles (SDVs). Utilizing AWS's Digital Proving Ground (DPG) platform, Honda plans to accelerate the development of electric vehicle (EV) capabilities and mobility solutions.
This collaboration will allow Honda to leverage AWS’s computing power, generative artificial intelligence (AI), and Internet of Things (IoT) capabilities. These advancements are expected to enable over-the-air software updates for existing vehicles, improving safety, security, efficiency, entertainment, and convenience. Furthermore, SDVs can be personalized based on drivers’ habits without requiring physical modifications.
AWS is providing the infrastructure necessary for Honda to rapidly develop and test new SDV models. The DPG platform will facilitate data collection on EV driving range and energy consumption while enabling vehicle software updates. This cloud-based approach reduces reliance on physical hardware by allowing design and testing in a virtual environment before production begins.
Honda also plans to utilize AWS IoT services to enhance vehicle quality and safety through continuous software updates. The company will implement Amazon Kinesis Video Streams to process video footage from car cameras using machine learning for anomaly detection. Such features aim to alert drivers about potential collisions or damages.
Generative AI from AWS is set to improve the EV charging experience by guiding drivers to optimal charging stations based on various factors like location and battery status. This service uses Amazon Bedrock for recommending charging stations aligned with driver preferences and behavior patterns. It is anticipated that this feature will debut in Honda's 0 Series line of EVs.
Ozgur Tohumcu, director of Automotive and Manufacturing at AWS, remarked: “The automotive industry is undergoing a seismic shift to digitization... We look forward to collaborating closely with Honda Motor Company.”
To support this transition, Honda has launched an Expert Builder Initiative with AWS aimed at training engineers proficient in both vehicle software and cloud technologies.
