Providence man pleads guilty to federal fentanyl trafficking charge

A Providence man has entered a guilty plea in federal court concerning a fentanyl trafficking charge. The announcement was made by United States Attorney Zachary A. Cunha. Montrell Dennis, aged 34, was implicated following an investigation by the FBI Safe Streets Task Force into drug trafficking activities.

Court documents and information revealed that a search of Dennis's residence in Providence on May 3, 2024, led to the discovery of several plastic bags containing fentanyl and other drugs. Toxicology reports identified 29.4 grams of a mixture that included fentanyl, heroin, cocaine, and xylazine, along with 1.37 grams of crack cocaine. Authorities also seized multiple digital scales, smartphones, and two firearms during the operation.

Dennis has been detained since his arrest on May 3, 2025. His sentencing is set for April 22, 2025. A federal district judge will determine his sentence after reviewing the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

Assistant United States Attorneys Peter I. Roklan and Taylor A. Dean are prosecuting the case, which was investigated by the FBI Rhode Island Safe Streets Gang Task Force.
