Matthew M. Graves U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia
Devan Green, a 30-year-old resident of Washington DC, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for stabbing his girlfriend multiple times. The incident occurred on September 19, 2023, in their shared apartment. The sentencing was announced by U.S. Attorney Edward R. Martin, Jr. and Chief Pamela Smith of the Metropolitan Police Department.
Green was found guilty on November 14, 2024, by a Superior Court jury on several charges including assault with intent to kill while armed and aggravated assault while armed. The trial lasted 13 days. Judge Rainey Brandt also issued an order prohibiting Green from contacting the victim or her son.
During the trial, evidence showed that Green confined his girlfriend and her child in their apartment for over forty minutes while family members repeatedly called emergency services. He initially stabbed his girlfriend once in the chest before attacking her again with 20 more stabs after she went to check on her son. Green fled the scene but was captured a month later.
U.S. Attorney Martin and Chief Smith praised the efforts of the Metropolitan Police Department in investigating the case. They also acknowledged Assistant U.S. Attorneys Molly K. Smith and Katharine E. Yaske from the Domestic Violence Section for their work in prosecuting Green.
