During a flight from Joint Base Andrews to Stuttgart on February 10, 2025, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth signed a memorandum renaming Fort Liberty in North Carolina to Fort Bragg. This change honors Pfc. Roland L. Bragg, a World War II hero recognized for his bravery during the Battle of the Bulge with both the Silver Star and Purple Heart awards.
"This change underscores the installation's legacy of recognizing those who have demonstrated extraordinary service and sacrifice for the nation," stated DOD Press Secretary John Ullyot.
The decision highlights the continued tradition of honoring military personnel who have shown exceptional courage and dedication. The renaming took place aboard a C-17 aircraft as part of Secretary Hegseth's journey to Germany.
Pfc. Roland Bragg was noted for his "conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity" while serving with the 17th Airborne Division during World War II, an acknowledgment reflected in this tribute through renaming one of North Carolina's prominent military installations.
