Durham man pleads guilty to providing support to ISIS

A Durham man, Alexander Justin White, has pled guilty to charges of conspiring and attempting to provide material support to ISIS. The 29-year-old was apprehended on December 4, 2024, while preparing to board an international flight with the intent of joining the foreign terrorist organization. If convicted, White could face a prison sentence of up to 20 years.

Acting U.S. Attorney Daniel P. Bubar commended the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF) for their role in the arrest. "In this case, the great work of the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF) was on display," he stated, emphasizing how such efforts protect communities from potential threats.

White had been active online between May and October 2024, posting content supportive of ISIS and jihad. This included recruitment videos and messages discussing his intention to join ISIS overseas as a "Mujahid." The complaint also alleges that White attempted financial transactions supporting ideological campaigns linked to ISIS.

Robert M. DeWitt, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI in North Carolina, highlighted the JTTF's efforts: "Thanks to the long and countless hours... worked by the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF), Mr. White was literally stopped in his tracks."

The investigation was led by the Raleigh-based JTTF, part of a nationwide network involving numerous law enforcement and intelligence agencies tasked with counterterrorism operations.

The announcement came from Daniel P. Bubar, Acting U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina. The prosecution team includes Assistant U.S. Attorneys Gabriel Diaz, Jason Kellhofer, and Andrew Sigler from the National Security Division Counterterrorism Section.
