Dominican national charged with meth trafficking after Massachusetts arrest

Joshua S. Levy, U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the District of Massachusetts

A Dominican national has been indicted by a federal grand jury for allegedly attempting to distribute methamphetamine in Massachusetts. Edwin Tomas Arias Ubri, 27, residing in Amesbury, faces one count of possession with intent to distribute 500 grams or more of methamphetamine. His arraignment is scheduled for February 27, 2025, in Boston federal court.

The indictment stems from an incident on January 14, 2025, where Arias Ubri reportedly agreed via text to supply five pounds of methamphetamine to a confidential source. Court records indicate that law enforcement observed him leaving the area near the source's residence and subsequently stopped his vehicle. A search revealed a white shopping bag containing approximately five pounds of a crystalline substance. Arias Ubri is noted to have entered the United States illegally in 2022.

If convicted, the charge carries a minimum sentence of ten years and could extend to life imprisonment. Additionally, it includes five years to life of supervised release and a fine up to $10 million. Following any sentence served, deportation proceedings will be initiated against Arias Ubri.

The announcement was made by United States Attorney Leah B. Foley and Stephen D. Belleau, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the Drug Enforcement Administration’s New England Field Office. The investigation received support from police departments in Amesbury, Salem, Melrose (Massachusetts), and Salem (New Hampshire). Assistant U.S. Attorney John O. Wray from the Narcotics and Money Laundering Unit is handling the prosecution.

It is important to note that these charges are allegations at this stage; Arias Ubri is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
