A Laredo man has been sentenced to federal prison for possessing firearms and ammunition, including one firearm hidden under his son's mattress. U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei announced that Miguel Angel Ferreyro Jr., 34, pleaded guilty on June 20, 2024. Previously convicted in 2022 for conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute over 100 kilograms of marijuana, Ferreyro was prohibited from possessing weapons or ammunition under federal law.
U.S. District Judge John A. Kazen sentenced Ferreyro to 37 months in federal prison followed by three years of supervised release. The judge remarked on the recklessness of leaving firearms in a child's bedroom, describing it as "crazy" and "insane," noting the situation was "fraught with the risk of danger."
Authorities discovered the firearms at Ferreyro's residence on February 14, 2024, after receiving information about a hidden gun. They recovered three firearms, approximately 184 rounds of ammunition, three high-capacity rifle magazines, and a rifle scope. One firearm was found under the mattress of his 12-year-old son's bed while other items were located in the child's closet.
Forensic analysis revealed that Ferreyro instructed another minor child to hide two firearms, one of which was loaded.
Ferreyro remains in custody awaiting transfer to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility.
The investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives with assistance from Border Patrol. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Bryan Oliver and Ann Booth prosecuted the case.
