Mexican national faces indictment for illegal reentry into the U.S

Roger B. Handberg, U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Florida

A Mexican national has been indicted for illegal reentry into the United States. The announcement was made by United States Attorney Roger B. Handberg in Jacksonville, Florida. Maico Miguel Perez, 27, is facing charges of illegal reentry after previously being deported. If convicted, he could face up to two years in federal prison.

Court documents reveal that Miguel Perez, a citizen and national of Mexico, was removed from the United States on November 23, 2022. He returned voluntarily and was found in the country again on September 2, 2024. His arrest took place in Duval County based on a local warrant. At this time, Miguel Perez has not received consent from either the Attorney General or the Secretary of Homeland Security to apply for readmission into the United States.

It is important to note that an indictment is simply a formal charge indicating that a defendant may have violated federal criminal law. Every defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

The investigation of this case was conducted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Enforcement Removal Operations (ERO). The prosecution will be handled by Assistant United States Attorney Kelli Swaney.
