A 46-year-old man from Starr County has been sentenced to prison for illegally possessing firearms, as announced by U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei. Rosvel Gonzalez, who pleaded guilty on November 21, 2024, was ordered by Chief U.S. District Judge Randy Crane to serve 36 months in federal prison followed by three years of supervised release.
The case against Gonzalez began on September 5, 2024, when an undercover law enforcement officer conducted a controlled sale of a firearm to him. Gonzalez was arrested after the transaction. A search of his home led to the discovery of eight additional firearms and various amounts of ammunition.
Investigations revealed that Gonzalez had previous felony convictions for possession of marijuana and manufacture and delivery of a controlled substance. As a convicted felon, federal law prohibits him from possessing firearms.
Gonzalez will remain in custody until he is transferred to a Bureau of Prisons facility. The investigation was carried out by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Cahal P. McColgan prosecuted the case under the Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) Program, which is part of the Department of Justice’s efforts to reduce violent crime. PSN involves collaboration among federal, state, and local stakeholders to address violent crime issues within communities through enforcement efforts focused on violent offenders and partnerships with prevention and reentry programs.
