ORGANIZATIONS IN THIS STORY

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is set to conduct a thorough review of the completed cleanup efforts at the Burgess Brothers Landfill Superfund site in Vermont this year. This process is part of a mandatory Five-Year Review to ensure that previous remediation continues to safeguard public health and the environment.

Upon completion, the results of this review will be made available on the site's individual EPA profile. The Burgess Brothers Landfill site, located in Bennington, will undergo this evaluation as part of its inclusion on the National Priorities List (NPL).

Further details about the site's status, including previous assessments and cleanup activities, can be accessed via cumulis.epa.gov/supercpad/cursites/csitinfo.cfm?id=0101450.

The Superfund program was established by Congress in 1980 to investigate and remediate complex hazardous waste sites across the United States. The program aims to return these sites to productive use. Currently, there are 123 Superfund sites across New England.

More information on Superfund and other cleanup initiatives in New England is available in a downloadable PDF file (91.36 KB).
