The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is set to review the cleanup efforts at ten Superfund sites in Massachusetts this year. These reviews are part of a legally mandated Five-Year Review process aimed at ensuring that past remediation efforts continue to safeguard public health and the environment.
Upon completion, the findings of these reviews will be accessible on each site's individual EPA site profile. The sites scheduled for review include Atlas Tack Corporation in Fairhaven, Blackburn and Union in Walpole, Cannon Engineering Corp. in Bridgewater, Charles George Reclamation Trust Landfill in Tyngsborough, Groveland Wells in Groveland, New Bedford Harbor in New Bedford, Norwood PCBs in Norwood, PSC Resources in Palmer, and Fort Devens.
Additionally, an addendum to a 2023 Five-Year Review for Sullivan's Ledge in New Bedford will be completed this year.
The Superfund program was established by Congress in 1980 to address complex hazardous waste sites across the country. It aims to return these sites to productive use through thorough investigation and cleanup activities. There are currently 123 Superfund sites throughout New England.
