The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is set to conduct comprehensive reviews of cleanup work at four National Priorities List (NPL) Superfund sites in Rhode Island this year. These reviews are part of a legally required Five-Year Review process to ensure that past remediation efforts continue to protect public health and the environment.
Upon completion, the Five-Year Review reports will be available on each site's individual EPA site profile. The sites undergoing review in 2025 include Rose Hill Regional Landfill in South Kingstown, Stamina Mills in North Smithfield, West Kingston Town Dump/URI Disposal Area in South Kingstown, and Newport Naval Education and Training Center in Newport.
The Superfund program was established by Congress in 1980 to investigate and clean up complex, uncontrolled, or abandoned hazardous waste sites across the country. The EPA aims to facilitate activities that return these sites to productive use. Currently, there are 123 Superfund sites across New England.
