Vanessa Roberts Avery, U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the District of Connecticut
A Honduran national, Jose Pavon-Fermin, has been sentenced to 20 months in prison for illegally reentering the United States after deportation. The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge Sarala V. Nagala in Hartford, as announced by Marc H. Silverman, Acting United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut.
Pavon-Fermin, aged 40, had previously been convicted in 2018 of sexual assault in the third degree and unlawful restraint in the first degree. He received a 10-year jail sentence, suspended after serving four and one-half years, followed by 10 years of probation. Additionally, he was required to register as a sex offender for life. After completing his state sentence in June 2021, Pavon-Fermin was deported from the U.S.
Despite his deportation, Pavon-Fermin returned to the U.S., where he was arrested on January 31, 2023, in Norwalk on charges including breach of peace and criminal trespass. Released on bond initially, he failed to appear in state court leading to an order for his rearrest in April 2023. Notably, he did not comply with sex offender registration requirements.
An indictment charged him with illegal reentry and failure to register as a sex offender on October 4, 2023. His arrest took place on March 7, 2024, in Rustburg, Virginia; since then he has remained detained. On November 14, 2024, Pavon-Fermin pleaded guilty to illegal reentry.
The investigation into this case was conducted by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Immigration and Customs Enforcement along with the United States Marshals Service. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Neeraj N. Patel and Alexis L. Beyerlein prosecuted the case.
