EPA plans barrier wall installation at Velsicol Chemical Superfund site

ORGANIZATIONS IN THIS STORY

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is set to commence the installation of a barrier wall this spring at the Velsicol Chemical Superfund site in St. Louis, Michigan. This project aims to mitigate the risk of soil and groundwater contamination entering the Pine River, as part of EPA's ongoing cleanup efforts at the former plant location. The agency anticipates completing this phase within the year.

Residents in the area can expect increased truck traffic due to equipment and materials being transported to cleanup zones along North Street and North Watson Street. The EPA has assured that measures will be taken to minimize construction noise, with work restricted to normal business hours.

An availability session is scheduled for Tuesday, March 18, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., at City Hall located at 300 N. Mill Street, St. Louis. During this session, residents will have an opportunity to learn more about the barrier wall construction and future steps in the Superfund process.

The EPA is collaborating closely with the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy throughout this cleanup initiative.

Further information can be accessed on EPA’s Velsicol Chemical Superfund site website.
