Missouri woman sentenced for wire fraud after embezzling over $400K

Clifford D. Johnson, U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Indiana

Michelle L. Bernskoetter, a 37-year-old resident of Wheeling, Missouri, has been sentenced to 27 months in prison by United States District Court Chief Judge Holly Brady. The sentencing follows her guilty plea to five counts of wire fraud, as announced by Acting United States Attorney Tina L. Nommay.

In addition to the prison term, Bernskoetter will undergo three years of supervised release and is required to pay $402,513.96 in restitution to the victim.

Court documents reveal that between June 12, 2020, and July 5, 2022, Bernskoetter engaged in a fraudulent scheme while employed as a financial manager. She exploited her position to embezzle funds from her employer for personal credit card debt payments, causing losses exceeding $400,000.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation led the investigation with support from the Fort Wayne Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Stacey R. Speith prosecuted the case.
