Aaron Herndon, a 39-year-old resident of Suitland, Maryland, received an 18-month prison sentence for robbing an elderly man in Northwest D.C. The sentencing was announced by U.S. Attorney Edward R. Martin, Jr. and Chief Pamela Smith of the Metropolitan Police Department.

Herndon had entered a guilty plea on December 17, 2024. Superior Court Judge Jason Park also imposed three years of supervised release following the prison term.

The incident occurred on May 5, 2024, when the victim, aged 87, was buying gift cards at a McDonald's located at 4100 Wisconsin Avenue NW. Surveillance footage captured Herndon approaching the victim from behind as he exited the restroom and taking his wallet from his jacket pocket. Witnesses reported seeing Herndon flee on foot after committing the robbery. He was apprehended later that day wearing the same clothes as during the crime.

The case was investigated by the Metropolitan Police Department with assistance from Assistant U.S. Attorneys Negar Kordestani and Trisha Jhunjhnuwala from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia. Assistant U.S. Attorney Hannah Skopicki prosecuted the case.
