Mark A. Totten United States Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Michigan
Acting U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Michigan, Andrew Birge, announced that Matthew Joseph Sheehan from Iron River has been sentenced to 84 months in federal prison. The sentence comes after Sheehan was found guilty of possessing methamphetamine with the intent to distribute.
Court records reveal that investigators had received information indicating Sheehan's involvement in transporting illicit drugs into the Upper Peninsula. These substances included methamphetamine, MDMA, and cocaine. In June 2023, a traffic stop in Iron County led officers to discover nearly a pound of methamphetamine, a smaller amount of cocaine, and over $6,000 in cash within Sheehan's vehicle. Further investigation at his residence uncovered additional drugs and more than $37,000.
The case was investigated by multiple agencies including the Michigan State Police, Upper Peninsula Substance Enforcement Team (UPSET), Drug Enforcement Administration, Department of Homeland Security Investigations, Iron River Police Department, and Iron County Sheriff’s Office.
