Duane A. Evans, U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Louisiana
Renard Santiago, a 19-year-old from New Orleans, has pleaded guilty to multiple charges related to drug trafficking and firearm possession. On February 18, 2025, Santiago admitted guilt before U.S. District Judge Wendy B. Vitter for conspiracy and possession with the intent to distribute marijuana, as well as possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime and possessing a machinegun.
Acting U.S. Attorney Michael M. Simpson announced the plea agreement, which includes Santiago serving a 15-year prison sentence. The court has yet to decide whether to accept or reject the negotiated plea until sentencing. Additionally, Santiago could face supervised release ranging from two years to life and fines up to $250,000 per count.
The investigation into Santiago's activities was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the New Orleans Police Department. Authorities discovered evidence on his Instagram account showing him with a handgun equipped with a machinegun conversion device and large amounts of cash while advertising marijuana sales.
Law enforcement executed a search warrant at Santiago's residence after observing these social media posts. He hid in his attic for four hours before being apprehended by officers who found his handgun with the conversion device attached, marijuana intended for distribution, and over $400 in cash.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence through collaboration between law enforcement agencies and communities. Assistant United States Attorney David Berman of the Violent Crime Unit is prosecuting this case.
