St. Louis man receives two-year sentence for ID fraud scheme

A St. Louis man has been sentenced to two years in prison for producing and selling fraudulent identification documents. U.S. District Judge Matthew T. Schelp delivered the sentence on Tuesday.

David B. Crosby, 28, admitted guilt in November to one count of fraud involving identification documents. He confessed to selling stolen or fraudulent IDs and a Social Security number through social media platforms.

In October 2023, Crosby sold a fake Missouri driver's license that included the name and details of a victim but featured someone else's photograph. He also provided the buyer with the victim's Social Security number. This information was later used in an attempt to secure a $70,000 BMW in Texas via a fraudulent loan application.

Crosby further acknowledged using false identification documents to try leasing an apartment and obtaining a $33,000 car loan. His actions were intended to cause financial losses amounting to at least $103,000.

The investigation was conducted by the U.S. Secret Service along with the St. Charles Police Department and the Wentzville Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Gwen Carroll handled the prosecution.
