Reagan T. Fondren Acting United States Attorney Western District Of Tennessee | U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Tennessee
Kenyata Wilson, a 36-year-old resident of Memphis, has been sentenced to federal prison for his involvement in leading a check fraud operation in the city. This announcement was made by Reagan Fondren, Acting United States Attorney for the Western District of Tennessee.
Court documents revealed that between May 2022 and February 2023, Wilson orchestrated a scheme where he acquired stolen checks and deposited them into bank accounts belonging to his accomplices. These co-conspirators then returned most of the funds to Wilson while keeping a small portion as their share. Surveillance footage captured Wilson at various ATM locations in Memphis depositing these stolen checks into an account designated for receiving the fraudulent funds. The total amount involved in this operation exceeded $42,000.
Wilson entered a guilty plea on November 18, 2024, before United States District Judge Thomas L. Parker on charges including one count of conspiracy to commit bank fraud and eleven counts of bank fraud. On February 20, 2025, he received a sentence of 24 months in federal prison followed by four years of supervised release. It is noted that there is no parole available within the federal system.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation's Nashville Field Office and Memphis Resident Agency conducted the investigation leading to this conviction.
Acting United States Attorney Fondren expressed gratitude towards Assistant United States Attorney William Bateman for prosecuting the case and acknowledged the contributions from law enforcement partners involved in the investigation.
