U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has taken into custody a Mexican national who was convicted of first-degree rape. Alejandro Salazar, 44, was arrested by ICE officers on February 21 upon his release from Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, New York.
Salazar entered the United States illegally in January 1995 without inspection by an immigration official. He was convicted by the New York County Supreme Court for first-degree rape on November 14, 2012, and received a sentence of 15 years in prison. An immigration detainer was lodged with the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision by ICE on March 19, 2013. Subsequently, an immigration judge ordered Salazar's removal to Mexico on October 17, 2013. The Clinton Correctional Facility complied with the detainer and transferred Salazar to ICE custody.
Currently, Salazar is held at Buffalo Federal Detention Facility in Batavia, New York as he awaits deportation.
