In a recent episode of the podcast "CDT's Tech Talks," hosted by Jamal Magby, the focus was on content moderation challenges in non-dominant languages, specifically Maghrebi Arabic dialects. The discussion coincided with the release of CDT's report titled “Moderating Maghrebi Arabic Content on Social Media,” which highlights the difficulties and potential improvements in moderating Arabic content online.
The episode featured insights from Mona Elswah, a researcher specializing in digital rights and content moderation, who is also a Fellow of the Content Moderation for Languages in the Global South Project at CDT. Joining her was Emna Mizouni, a Tunisian digital rights advocate and founder-CEO of Digital Citizenship.
Elswah and Mizouni addressed the unique obstacles faced by speakers of Maghrebi Arabic on social media platforms. They emphasized the importance for these platforms to recognize and bridge existing gaps to ensure more inclusive and equitable content moderation practices.
