Guatemalan man sentenced for illegal re-entry into US

Timothy T. Duax U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Iowa

A Guatemalan man has been sentenced to a year in federal prison for illegally re-entering the United States after deportation. Adan Gomez-Juarez, 25, from Sioux City, Iowa, pleaded guilty on October 24, 2024, to one count of illegal re-entry.

Gomez-Juarez admitted at his plea hearing that he had unlawfully returned to the U.S. after being deported in 2020. He was apprehended by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers in Sioux City on August 28, 2024, following an arrest for operating while intoxicated (OWI) by local police.

United States District Court Judge Leonard T. Strand handed down the sentence in Sioux City. Gomez-Juarez received a 12-month imprisonment term and will also serve a three-year supervised release period afterward. The federal system does not allow parole.

Assistant United States Attorney Kevin Fletcher prosecuted the case, which was investigated by ICE's Enforcement and Removal Office.
