Roger B. Handberg, U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Florida
Acting United States Attorney Sara C. Sweeney has announced an indictment against Mario Antonio Mejia-Calderon, a 34-year-old Honduran national. He faces charges of possessing a fraudulent permanent resident card, commonly known as a green card, and illegal re-entry into the United States after previous deportation. If found guilty on both counts, Mejia-Calderon could face up to 12 years in federal prison. He is currently detained awaiting trial.
The indictment states that Mejia-Calderon was discovered unlawfully present in the U.S. on January 24, 2025, after being deported on June 11, 2013. On the same day he was found with a counterfeit green card.
It is important to note that an indictment serves as a formal accusation of violations of federal criminal law; defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
The investigation was conducted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Enforcement Removal Operations (ERO). The case will be prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Michael J. Coolican.
