The Department of the Interior has announced a new 10-year lease and right of way with Williams Transco. This agreement allows for the continued use of historic hangars at Floyd Bennett Field, part of the Gateway National Recreation Area, for energy infrastructure. The deal is intended to provide a vital resource to New York City while responsibly using federal lands.

Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum commented on past uses of the site: "Under the previous administration, Floyd Bennett Field was turned into a migrant encampment — an inappropriate and irresponsible use of one of our nation’s historic sites, opposed by the local community." He added that the new lease "is a win for conservation, history, common sense and energy affordability."

Floyd Bennett Field was used as a migrant shelter during President Biden's administration, which led to criticism from local leaders and residents. In response to this situation, Congress passed H.R. 5283 in November 2023 to prevent similar uses of national parks.

The partnership between NPS and Williams Transco began in 2013 when Williams invested $22 million to restore Hangars 1 and 2. These hangars were converted into a natural gas metering and regulating station essential for New York City's energy supply.

The Trump administration views this lease extension as prioritizing responsible land management while supporting America's energy future. Revenue from this lease will continue funding park maintenance and improvements at Floyd Bennett Field.

"The American people deserve better than to see their public lands misused for failed immigration policies," said Burgum. He described the agreement as "a model for how we can honor our past, secure our future and pursue Energy Dominance."
