Today, the U.S. Department of Education issued a statement regarding Maine's adherence to Title IX requirements. Craig Trainor, the Acting Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights, expressed concern over the state's current stance.

"It is shameful that Governor Mills refuses to stand with women and girls," Trainor stated. He emphasized that Maine's rejection of its antidiscrimination obligations, which were accepted upon receiving federal funds, is considered unlawful. The Office for Civil Rights (OCR) continues to investigate Maine and one of its school administrative districts for potential violations of federal law.

Trainor also addressed education leaders in Maine who support Title IX compliance: "To Maine education leaders who stand up for girls and will comply with Title IX in their school districts and campuses: The Trump Administration—and the American people—support you fully."
