Pentagon directs DoD civilians on responding to OPM email request

The Department of Defense has issued new guidance for its civilian employees in response to a recent request from the Office of Personnel Management (OPM). The OPM had asked federal civilians to provide a summary of their weekly accomplishments. Initially, Department of Defense employees were instructed to pause their responses.

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth emphasized the importance of civilian contributions to national security and the department's core mission. "Our Civilian patriots who dedicate themselves to defending this nation working for the Department of Defense are critical to our national security," he stated. He also noted the ongoing efforts under President Trump's leadership to focus on the department's warfighting mission.

After reviewing Pentagon procedures and consulting with OPM, Secretary Hegseth directed all civilian members of the department to submit five bullet points detailing their job accomplishments from the previous week to their immediate supervisors. "These reports will be consolidated internally within the Department to comply with the OPM directive," he explained.

DoD civilians will receive further instructions via email regarding compliance with this initiative. The memorandum outlining these steps is available for reference.
