U.S. objects to ICAO's sustainable aviation fuels recommendation

ORGANIZATIONS IN THIS STORY

The United States has voiced strong objections to a recommendation concerning "sustainable" aviation fuels at the 13th triennial meeting of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Committee on Aviation Environmental Protection (CAEP). The recommendation, which suggests multi-cropping for sustainable aviation fuels, is seen by the U.S. as unfairly penalizing American farmers while significantly benefiting Brazil.

The U.S. government argues that this proposal lacks adequate technical or scientific backing and is considered premature. Despite these concerns, CAEP adopted the recommendation, which the U.S. claims will negatively impact its farmers and aviation industry while encouraging deforestation in threatened tropical forests.

Nevertheless, the United States remains committed to engaging constructively with ICAO and CAEP. The country is open to collaborating with member states, U.S. industry, and other observers on recommendations that align with U.S. interests and contribute positively to ICAO's objectives.

In line with the Executive Order titled “Putting America First in International Environmental Agreements,” the U.S. delegation collaborated with over 33 member states, U.S. industry representatives, and other observers on proposals supporting aviation safety, promoting leadership in civil supersonic aircraft, and addressing critical topics within the aviation sector.

The United States expressed appreciation for ICAO's efforts and those of CAEP's co-chairs and working groups in organizing the recent session held in Montreal.
