Michael J. Heyman appointed interim U.S attorney for Alaska

Michael J. Heyman has been appointed as the U.S. Attorney for the District of Alaska by U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi. He was sworn in on March 3, 2025, by U.S. District Judge Timothy M. Burgess and will serve on an interim basis for 120 days or until a Presidential nominee is confirmed by the Senate.

Mr. Heyman brings over two decades of legal experience to his new role. His career with the Justice Department began in 2012 as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Southern District of California, where he dealt with international narcotics trafficking, human trafficking, firearms, money laundering, immigration, and public corruption cases. He also served at U.S Embassies in Kathmandu, Nepal, and Colombo, Sri Lanka as a Resident Legal Advisor focusing on developing rule of law and combatting transnational crime.

In 2020, Mr. Heyman joined the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Alaska focusing on complex financial crimes and received recognition for his prosecutorial work with the U.S. Department of Justice Director’s Award in 2023.

Before his tenure at the Justice Department, Mr. Heyman was a partner at K&L Gates LLP practicing commercial litigation and insolvency law and also worked as a law clerk in the U.S Bankruptcy Court.

He holds a Juris Doctor from George Washington University Law School (2001) and Bachelor degrees in Political Science and International Studies from University of California, Irvine (1998).

"It is the honor of a lifetime to act as chief federal law enforcement officer in the district alongside our exceptional local, state and federal law enforcement partners."
