The Middle District of Florida's U.S. Attorney’s Office reported collections exceeding $47 million in civil and criminal actions for the fiscal year ending September 30, 2024. Acting U.S. Attorney Sara C. Sweeney stated that the office collected $16,429,786 from criminal cases and $31,056,428 from civil actions.
The Civil Division, led by Randy Harwell, recovered over $104 million on behalf of federal agencies through affirmative civil enforcement cases. This includes $73 million from joint efforts with other U.S. Attorney’s Offices and the Department of Justice Civil Frauds Section.
“These strong recovery figures show a continued commitment by our office in the critical areas of criminal and civil enforcement,” said Acting United States Attorney Sara Sweeney.
The Asset Recovery Division, under Chief Laura Taylor, recovered more than $16 million through criminal monetary penalties and forfeiture actions. Additionally, they collected an extra $26,403 in penalties through collaboration with other offices.
Significant cases include:
- Walgreens Boots Alliance settled for $106.8 million over false claims related to uncollected prescriptions.
- Dr. Edward Lubin agreed to pay $1.5 million to settle allegations involving kickbacks for prescribing Subsys.
- Bluestone Physician Services resolved claims for unnecessary billing with a settlement of $14.9 million.
- Daniel Hurt agreed to a settlement of approximately $27 million related to Medicare fraud involving cancer genomic tests.
- New Horizons Computer Learning Center franchises settled for $1.35 million over subsidy program violations.
- Miles Partnership LLC paid over $2 million regarding Paycheck Protection Program loan issues.
- H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center agreed to pay nearly $20 million due to improper billing practices in clinical trials.
- Baptist Health System resolved Anti-Kickback statute issues with a payment of $1.5 million.
