Florida man admits guilt in federal firearm offense

William S. Thompson U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of West Virginia

Marcas Cory Anglin, a 30-year-old resident of Tampa, Florida, has entered a guilty plea for the charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm. This legal development occurred today in Charleston, West Virginia.

Court records reveal that on October 2, 2020, law enforcement officers attempted to stop Anglin's vehicle in Nicholas County's Pool area. Anglin evaded officers both by car and on foot before he engaged in an armed standoff with them while carrying a loaded Glock model 27 .40-caliber pistol. The authorities apprehended Anglin and confiscated the weapon.

Federal regulations forbid individuals with felony convictions from possessing firearms or ammunition. Anglin was aware of this restriction due to his previous felony conviction for armed burglary of a dwelling in Hillsborough County, Florida Circuit Court on June 19, 2014.

Anglin is set to be sentenced on July 8, 2025. He could face up to ten years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a fine amounting to $250,000.

Acting United States Attorney Lisa G. Johnston announced the guilty plea and praised the investigative efforts of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) along with the West Virginia State Police.

The case was overseen by Senior United States District Judge David A Faber. Assistant United States Attorney JC MacCallum is responsible for prosecuting the case.

This case falls under Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), which aims to reduce violent crime and gun violence through collaboration between law enforcement agencies and communities. On May 26, 2021, the Department introduced an enhanced strategy focusing on trust-building within communities, supporting violence prevention organizations, prioritizing strategic enforcement actions, and evaluating outcomes.
