Roger B. Handberg, U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Florida

A Florida dentist has been sentenced to two years in prison for making threats against public figures, an election official, and others over a span of five years. The sentencing took place yesterday in Tampa.

Court documents reveal that Richard Glenn Kantwill, aged 61, sent more than 100 threatening messages via Facebook, Instagram, email, and text between September 2019 and July 2020. His targets included various public figures known for their political commentary. Among those threatened were an author, a religious figure, and a television personality. From April 2022 to April 2024, Kantwill continued his actions by sending at least seven additional threats to four public figures through Facebook. This series of threats also involved an election official from another state in February 2024.

Kantwill admitted guilt in November 2024 to four counts of interstate transmission of a threat.

The announcement was made by Supervisory Official Antoinette T. Bacon of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division, Acting U.S. Attorney Sara C. Sweeney for the Middle District of Florida, and Special Agent in Charge Matthew Fodor of the FBI Tampa Field Office.

The investigation was conducted by the FBI.

Trial Attorney Aaron L. Jennen from the Criminal Division’s Public Integrity Section and Assistant U.S. Attorney Abigail K. King for the Middle District of Florida prosecuted the case with support from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Colorado.
