FTC issues refunds for deceptive Pure Green Coffee ads

ORGANIZATIONS IN THIS STORY

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is distributing over $905,000 in refunds to consumers who purchased Pure Green Coffee, a weight loss product falsely advertised by NPB Advertising. The FTC's legal action against NPB Advertising began in May 2014, leading to an amended complaint in 2015 that accused the company of deceptive marketing practices involving fake health claims and testimonials.

Most defendants settled with the FTC in November 2015. However, the main orchestrator faced a court ruling against them in November 2016. Since then, the FTC has worked diligently to enforce the judgment.

Refunds are being issued through checks and PayPal payments to 39,977 consumers affected by these deceptive practices. Recipients must cash their checks within 90 days or redeem PayPal payments within 30 days. For questions regarding payments, consumers can contact Epiq Systems at 877-839-1696 or visit the FTC's website for more information on the refund process. Importantly, "The Commission never requires people to pay money or provide account information to get a refund."

The FTC provides interactive dashboards detailing state-by-state refund data from its cases. In 2024 alone, FTC actions resulted in over $337 million returned to consumers nationwide.

The Federal Trade Commission aims to foster competition while protecting and educating consumers. The agency emphasizes that it will "never demand money, make threats, tell you to transfer money, or promise you a prize." More consumer information is available at consumer.ftc.gov, and fraud reports can be submitted at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
