Federal grand jury indicts man for drug trafficking and firearms offenses

A federal grand jury in Louisville, Kentucky, has indicted an individual for alleged drug and firearm offenses. U.S. Attorney Michael A. Bennett of the Western District of Kentucky announced the charges on March 4, 2025, alongside officials from the ATF Louisville Field Division, Homeland Security Investigations, Enforcement and Removal Operations Chicago, U.S. Immigration Customs, and the Louisville Metro Police Department.

The indictment names Edi Diaz-Lopez, also known as Edy Diaz-Lopez, a 30-year-old Mexican citizen. He faces charges of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine and possession of firearms by a prohibited person. On January 3, 2025, he allegedly had in his possession a Phoenix .25 caliber pistol and a Bryco model 59 nine-millimeter pistol while being unlawfully present in the United States.

Diaz-Lopez appeared before a United States Magistrate Judge for the Western District of Kentucky on March 6, 2025. He was ordered to be detained pending trial. If convicted, he could face up to 40 years in prison. The final sentence will be determined by a federal district court judge based on sentencing guidelines and other statutory factors.

"There is no parole in the federal system," authorities noted regarding potential sentencing outcomes.

The case is under investigation by multiple agencies including ATF, HSI, ICE/ERO, and LMPD. Assistant U.S. Attorney Frank Dahl is prosecuting.

Authorities emphasized that "an indictment is merely an allegation" and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
