Microsoft reports strong Q2 results driven by cloud and AI growth

Microsoft Corp. has reported its financial results for the quarter ending December 31, 2024. The company announced a revenue of $69.6 billion, marking a 12% increase compared to the same period last year. Operating income rose by 17% to $31.7 billion, while net income increased by 10% to $24.1 billion. Diluted earnings per share also saw a rise of 10%, reaching $3.23.

Satya Nadella, chairman and CEO of Microsoft, highlighted the company's focus on innovation in AI technology: “We are innovating across our tech stack and helping customers unlock the full ROI of AI to capture the massive opportunity ahead.” He noted that Microsoft's AI business achieved an annual revenue run rate exceeding $13 billion, up 175% from the previous year.

Amy Hood, executive vice president and CFO of Microsoft, commented on cloud revenue: “This quarter Microsoft Cloud revenue was $40.9 billion, up 21% year-over-year.” She emphasized Microsoft's commitment to balancing operational discipline with investments in cloud and AI infrastructure.

In terms of business segments, Productivity and Business Processes generated $29.4 billion in revenue with a growth of 14%. Intelligent Cloud reported revenues of $25.5 billion, an increase of 19%. The More Personal Computing segment remained relatively unchanged at $14.7 billion.

Microsoft returned $9.7 billion to shareholders through dividends and share repurchases during this quarter.
