Michele Beckwith Acting U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of California
Euan David MacGregor, previously known as David Joseph Bean, has been sentenced to 41 months in prison and an additional 36 months of supervised release. The sentence was handed down by Senior Judge John A. Mendez following charges of defrauding his former employer out of more than $3.2 million. Acting United States Attorney Michele Beckwith confirmed the details of the sentencing.
MacGregor, who is now residing in Iowa City, Iowa, will also be required to pay restitution amounting to $3,217,456.41 to the victim of his fraudulent activities.
Court documents reveal that between November 2014 and January 2020, MacGregor exploited his role as a Chief Administrative Officer to perpetrate the fraud. His tactics included redirecting at least 122 checks intended for his employer into bank accounts under his control. He achieved this by establishing a shell corporation with a name resembling that of his employer's business and depositing the checks into accounts associated with this entity.
Further deception involved presenting falsified financial records to company executives, leading them to believe they had received funds that were actually diverted by MacGregor. Additionally, he misled his employer about outsourcing bookkeeping tasks to Essential Business Services—a second shell company he created—to siphon off thousands monthly for services never rendered.
The ill-gotten gains funded personal expenses such as mortgage payments, credit card bills, educational fees, travel costs, and vehicle purchases or leases for himself and his family.
The investigation leading to MacGregor's conviction was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), with Assistant United States Attorney Shelley D. Weger overseeing prosecution efforts in this case.
