In a recent interview with Rachel Campos-Duffy of Fox Noticias, Secretary of State Marco Rubio discussed the current administration's strategies and priorities in the Western Hemisphere. Secretary Rubio emphasized the importance of defending U.S. national interests while maintaining alliances with neighboring countries like El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Panama, the Dominican Republic, Argentina, and Paraguay.
"Moreover," he noted, "we also have specific issues such as drug trafficking and the illegal smuggling of migrants into the country." Rubio acknowledged cooperation from various governments in addressing these challenges but highlighted that more work is needed.
When asked if Mexico is a narco-state, Secretary Rubio commented on cartel control over Mexican territory and corruption within its judicial system. He mentioned an unprecedented wave of extraditions from Mexico to the United States as a positive step but noted ongoing issues with corruption.
Regarding President Donald Trump's approach to tariffs and immigration control at the southern border, Rubio explained that emergency powers have led to historic reductions in illegal crossings. However, he stated that drug trafficking remains a significant problem despite these efforts.
Rubio addressed concerns about China's influence in Panama following President Mulino's decision not to renew The Belt and Road Initiative with China. He expressed satisfaction with Mulino's actions but reiterated U.S. concerns about Chinese influence over the Panama Canal.
The conversation also touched on Venezuela's political situation. Rubio praised María Corina Machado for her courage against Maduro's regime while condemning its ties to Iran and criminal elements like el Tren de Aragua. He criticized previous concessions made by Joe Biden’s administration to Maduro’s government.
Reflecting on his role as Secretary of State under President Trump, Rubio stated: "I am here to implement President Trump’s policies... If I leave here in four years’ time having led a State Department that has defended the national interests of the United States... I believe that would be a great achievement for me."
Rubio concluded by reiterating his commitment to executing directives from President Trump effectively during his tenure.
