Timothy T. Duax U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Iowa
Marcus Fair, a 28-year-old from Dolton, Illinois, has been sentenced to 57 months in federal prison for possessing a firearm as a prohibited person. The sentencing took place on March 12, 2025.
The case against Fair originated from an incident on September 21, 2022, when law enforcement responded to reports of domestic disturbance and animal cruelty at a residence in Humboldt, Iowa. During the investigation, officers discovered a discarded backpack in nearby woods containing items linked to Fair. Among these items were a loaded Taurus G3C 9mm pistol with an obliterated serial number, an extended magazine, and marijuana. As Fair was identified as a user of marijuana, he was legally barred from possessing firearms.
United States District Court Judge Leonard T. Strand presided over the sentencing. In addition to his prison term, Fair will serve three years of supervised release following his imprisonment. There is no parole available in the federal system. Until his transfer to a federal prison is arranged, Fair remains under the custody of the United States Marshal Service.
This case falls under Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative by the Department of Justice aimed at reducing violent crime through evidence-based strategies. PSN brings together various stakeholders to address significant violent crime issues within communities and develop comprehensive solutions.
