TechNet has filed an amicus curiae brief at the Supreme Court in the case of Cisco v. Doe, urging a review of a Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals decision. This decision could hold American companies and their executives accountable for actions by foreign entities involving products legally acquired from these companies, regardless of intent to aid those actions.
The brief was submitted with support from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Business Roundtable, and the National Association of Manufacturers. TechNet's Executive Vice President, Carl Holshouser, expressed concerns that such legal accountability could deter American businesses from operating internationally due to increased litigation risks. "Making American companies the scapegoats for alleged crimes by foreign actors in the countries where they operate doesn’t just stretch the bounds of the law, it would make America less competitive and chill investments around the world," Holshouser stated.
TechNet’s Innovation Legal Center (ILC) is actively involved in this legal matter, representing innovation economy interests through effective advocacy. The ILC engages in various legal activities to promote pro-innovation laws and defend against regulatory challenges.
The center is led by Carl Holshouser with Drew Hudson as litigation director and Ebbie Yazdani providing policy and legal expertise.
